Its construction began by the Spanish encomendero Jacinto de la Portilla, who later became a minority missionary of the Franciscan order, known in Zacapoaxtla as fray Cintos. It should be noted that in America there are only three parishes with this category: that of Córdoba, Argentina; that of Lima, Peru; and that of Zacapoaxtla, Puebla.
